Our Adventure Aboard Cumbres & Toltec Railroad

It was a gorgeous day with no rain in sight. It seemed like a packed train with people from around the world standing in line to climb aboard. Spectators were everywhere taking photos of the train. Every time we passed a highway, some people stopped along the side of the road, taking pictures or just waving at us. Our adventure started in New Mexico and lasted all day. It was indeed a great experience.

There are several ways to ride the train – round trip, ride halfway, ride one way, and take a bus back. We chose to ride a round trip. It was long, especially for our 7-year-old. Had I known, I might have decided to ride the train one way and take a bus back. I believe the price is the same.  Also, you can start in New Mexico or Colorado.

The History of Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad

The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is America’s longest and highest narrow-gauge railroad. It’s also one of the country’s best-preserved railroad museums, designated both a National and State Registered Historic Site and a National Civil Engineering Landmark.

Our Fun Family Adventure Aboard the Train

Traveling through parts of New Mexico and Colorado, you see beautiful scenery, including all kinds of trees, mountains, and even some wildlife.

They say to keep all hands and arms inside the window, but I never heard them say anything about your head! Oops…don’t tell. I love this picture of our son…but I did make him get his head back in after the photo!! It’s a one-time adventure, so I wanted to make it memorable! However, I have a friend here in Texas who takes her family every year – so who knows…we may go back too. Chama, NM, is gorgeous, and I know we will be back there.

We had Cinder Bear visit. I believe he walked up and down the train from our first stop to our third stop, taking pictures with the kids, laughing, and playing. It was fun for the kids to see Cinder Bear and receive the pencils and stickers he gave them.

I love it when this kid picks up a map. I think I have 6 or 7 other images where he’s looking at a map. With this particular map, we mapped out where we thought the train was and which route it would take.

If you ever get a chance to ride Cumbres & Toltec Railroad, do it. It’s expensive, and this picture above shows that they took one just like it, and it cost $25, so save your money and good luck looking for a coupon. I could not find one. I’m not knocking this experience down, but do be prepared to spend some money. You can’t beat the scenery and memories!

We truly enjoyed our adventure aboard the Cumbres & Toltec Railroad. Take the ride when you can! Check it all out on their website – www.cumbrestoltec.org.
