Did you know that trees do wonders for the environment? My son brought home a tree from school given to him by a few companies in the Denton County area, which I’ll name below. Today, I thought I would share the top 6 ways trees benefit the environment and people and show you the tree he received. He is so happy about it.
Top 6 Ways Trees Benefit The Environment
Last week, I saw many kids walking home with trees in their hands, my son included. These trees were given to 3rd graders by the Denton County Master Gardener Association, the Denton County Soil and Water Conservation District, and the Upper Trinity Regional Water District. For what reason? I didn’t know until I looked it up. My son had no idea either. Being that we love gardening and the environment, Brody joined the Garden Club at school. So, I think this is a pretty big deal, and we both couldn’t wait to plant the tree in our yard. He received a Bald Cypress tree.

How to Care for a Bald Cypress Tree
The Bald Cypress is a large tree and grows very tall. It’s native to southern states down to Texas – thriving though in zones 4 through 9. Before winter, the Bald Cypress loses its leaves and then grows its bright green leaves back in spring.
Before you plant, make sure you have plenty of sun and lots of space to grow your Bald Cypress. The tree can grow as high as 100-120 feet. Be patient, though; it grows slowly.
Be aware that this tree likes good drainage and some moisture. The ideal soil for your tree will be acidic, moist, and sandy. Irrigate by punching holes all around the tree with your forefinger to feed it once a season for the first full year.
I hope we still live at this house to see it grow big!!

So, why did these organizations give these kids a tree to plant? In hopes of educating Denton County residents about science-based, sustainable horticultural practices that promote healthy gardens, landscapes, and communities.
What an awesome thing to do, I wouldn’t say I like cutting down trees in our yard, but sometimes we have to. But when we do, we make sure we plant another one in its place. We live in the “old part of town” where the trees are old and sometimes fall due to old age or get blown down by bad weather. We have lost at least two huge trees from high wind and even a snow storm we had one year.
How trees benefit our environment and people:
- Protects watershed quality and conserves water resources
- Reduces soil erosion
- Provides food and shelter for wildlife
- Cleanses the air we breathe
- Reduces energy costs
- Increases property values
While you’re at it, you may want to consult Houston arborists if you should need more information about growing trees.
It is sad to see so many trees being cut down to build buildings and houses. Where’s the wildlife going to live?
What are your thoughts on so many trees getting cut down to make room for more buildings? It’s scary to think our world is growing that fast. I hope wildlife has a place to live too. Did these top 6 ways trees benefit the environment and people make you think twice about where you live?
