Fall Camping at Lake Tenkiller State Park Oklahoma

September 13, 2018 Kim Leave a Comment

Each year for Thanksgiving we take a road trip northeast to beautiful Vian, Oklahoma to spend the holidays with my in-laws. Their home sits on one of the prettiest lots I’ve ever seen in Oklahoma. We, however, do the fall camping at Lake Tenkiller State Park, Oklahoma when we visit during the holidays.

So lucky for my in-laws, they live in an area that’s not only gorgeous, but that offers homeowners a place to enjoy the outdoors, fish, boating and just to enjoy nature. That my friends are beautiful Lake Tenkiller State Park. Though when Thanksgiving rolls around, they usually have the whole family at their place for the holiday, and that prevents a problem trying to get us all comfy in their home. So, it’s my family (my mom, husband, son, and myself) who get to stay at the Tenkiller lake cabins. We don’t mind one bit.

Fall Camping at Lake Tenkiller State Park Oklahoma

Oklahoma’s Tenkiller State Park, located near the dam of Lake Tenkiller, offers a wonderful vacation area for people who love nature and natural beauty. The scenery is breathtaking, and the limestone cliffs are a sight to be seen. With over 1,190 acres in Green Country, you’re sure to find plenty to do. My son has a huge backyard to play in, and we get to hike around the cabin and let our dogs have fun too. That’s why I don’t mind a bit if we have to pay to stay there.

Did you know

Lake Tenkiller State Park is located on the Illinois River a few miles south of Tahlequah, Tenkiller Ferry Lake lies in the heart of the Cookson Hills and reaches more than 25 miles up the river into Sequoyah and Cherokee Counties.

Lake Tenkiller State Park is about a 5-hour drive from the Dallas/Fort Worth area. At this time of year, you have to make reservations ahead of time because it’s the perfect destination for hunters as well as family gatherings for Thanksgiving. My in-laws always make our reservation because they get a senior discount – every bit helps, right?

Things to do at Lake Tenkiller

  1. Nature Center
  2. Outdoor fire pit
  3. Beautiful surroundings
  4. Gorgeous Fall leaves
  5. Walking/hiking trails
  6. Gift shop
  7. Cabins of all sizes
  8. Stocked kitchen plus bedding, and bath accessories
  9. Areas for boating and fishing
  10. and much more!

Tenkiller State Park Camping

As many times as we’ve been to Lake Tenkiller State Park, we’ve never visited the Nature Center, but I can attest to the beautiful surroundings of nature that surrounds the campgrounds. The nature center building is closed at that time of year, or we would have gone inside. We mostly hang out outside near our cabin. It’s nice, especially this time of year when the leaves have fallen. This area is one place my son doesn’t mind playing outdoors by himself.

Shopping near Lake Tenkiller

Mom, Judie (Mother-in-law) and I always find time to shop in Gore and Vian, and we always find something extraordinary at Anne-Paige.

This post was from lasts year’s visit, and we are planning another trip there again for this year.
