With all my recipes, I use better-for-you ingredients. And to be honest, most of the time, my family likes what I make, but there are times when they don’t, only because I used other ingredients than the norm. It’s hit or miss, but that’s okay with me.
If you’re looking for other healthy blackberry desserts, I’ve made plenty in cast iron.

Easy Cast Iron Blackberry Blueberry Cobbler
For a delicious berry cobbler made with better-for-you ingredients, follow this recipe to a tee.
Ingredients
- 1 pint fresh blackberries & blueberries
- 1 cup raw granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup firmly packed unrefined organic brown coconut sugar Try Big Tree Farms
- 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons of Bob's Red Mill Unbleached White All-purpose Flour
- 2 tbsp fresh lemon juice from a lemon no lemon, no problem - use white wine
- 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/4 cup Kerrygold grass-fed butter
- 3/4 tsp aluminum-free baking powder
- 1/4 tsp sea salt
- 1/2 cup grass-fed milk
Instructions
-
Place a 10-in cast iron skillet in the oven to preheat at 350 degrees
-
In a medium bowl, stir together the berries, 1/2 cup of the sugar, coconut brown sugar, 2 tablespoons of flour, lemon juice or wine, and nutmeg
-
Melt the butter in the skillet that's in the oven until browned around the edges and sizzling hot.
-
While the butter is melting, in a large bowl, mix together 1/2 cup flour, 1/2 cup sugar, baking powder, salt, and milk just until combined. A few lumps left are okay.
-
Pour batter into the hot skillet; do not stir. Immediately pour the berry mixture over the batter.
-
Bake 30-35 minutes or until crust looks golden and crisp.
Just look at the butter oozing from the center. It kind of looks sinful, doesn’t it?
So, below I captured the sizzling sound of my blackberry blueberry cobbler coming out of the oven. Oh, and please excuse my dirty oven, but it’s probably one of the best homemade desserts I’ve made thus far.
