DIY Dishwasher Powder Lemon Essential Oil
Kitchen Power!! I’m very much into this “DIY” thing lately and read where I could make my dishwasher powder, so I did! The lemon essential oil adds such a pleasant fresh scent to it, and of course, lemons are known for its cleaning ability.
This mixture was smooth to make, inexpensive and great to have on hand. Sadly, I had to tell Brody (my four yr old) he could not help me with this DIY! Be sure to keep children away from your DIY products when it involves Borax powder – it’s a little harsh, and you don’t want them to touch it than put their hands in their mouths.
How to Make Dishwasher Powder
- 2 cups borax
- 1 cup baking soda
- 1/2 cup citric acid
- 1/2 cup kosher salt
- 5-10 drops Lemon essential oil or another 100% pure essential oil made for cleaning, such as Orange
Instructions to make:
- Combine all ingredients and mix well.
- Store in a sealed glass container.
To use, fill both cups in the dishwasher. Don’t try to add less, I’ve tried, and it doesn’t work well enough. Also, you’ll need to rinse off all food and particles before placing dishes in the dishwasher.
PLEASE NOTE: After using this recipe for a while, I’ve noticed it works better if both cups in the dishwasher are filled with powder -AND- all food gets rinsed off the dishes first.
Insert July 2016 – My husband doesn’t think this mixture works well enough, so I need to perfect it. If you have any suggestions to make this DIY Automatic Dishwasher Powder Lemon Essential Oil mixture better, please leave me a comment. Thank you.
Here’s an extra tip: For an extra added benefit, splash 1 cup of white vinegar on bottom of dishwasher for extra shine.
All ingredients are available at Walmart, except the essentials oils – I use doTerra pure essential oils. You’ll find citric acid is in the canning aisle at Walmart. To make more green cleaning supplies, check out this GreenCraft Magazine. It’s got various homemade product recipes for you to make right at home.
Note: 100% pure essential oils are concentrated – so only 5-10 drops of the Lemon essential oil is all you need. Also, be sure to use essential oils that are 100% pure – that way, there’s nothing in the oils other than oil. Critical!
Borax – $3.38 at Walmart
Kosher salt – $1.69 at Target
Baking soda – $2.06 at Walmart
Citric acid in bulk – $2.97 at Walmart
